\nWatch these videos about artists who affect space and the way it is experienced through drawing.\n\nRoman Ondak, Measuring the Universe\n<\/a>\nADA by Karina Smigla-Bobinski\n<\/a>\nADA - Analog Interactive Installation \/ Kinetic Sculpture \/ Post Digital Drawing Machine<\/a>\n\nWhich work do you prefer and why? Much of Ondak\u2019s work seems to be preoccupied with social relations and humanity as a socially organising system. Smigla-Bobinski\u2019s ADA kinetic drawing machine seems to be focused much more on the phenomena of space and walls and marks. Some viewers have even been drawn on by the machine themselves as they got in the way, while others try to grab it and alter its course.<\/code><\/pre>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n

I chose to start this project with the research tasks as I always find them inspiring and would like to be embed what I learn from them in my own artwork. I am drawn to the idea of creating a visual experience that extends beyond the canvas and was inspired by learning about how Allison Katz thinks about the space and the viewer’s journey before she decides what to paint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Roman Ondak<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Measuring the Universe <\/em>is a live performance where the artist invites people to measure themselves against the wall of a square room using a black pen. As more people engage with the room, we see the average height being visually represented in the form of a dark line on the wall. It’s a transient piece of artwork which uses data and people to be realised. It’s interesting as a concept and also produces an interesting visual effect. I watched the first video from the performance in 2011 at the Tate<\/a>, and realised there were many others. The performance was recorded at the MoMA in 2007<\/a> and there is an interview of the artist<\/a> explaining his thoughts behind the work in 2009. He explains he always uses the same black pen so the reenactment of the performance has a similar visual aesthetic. Yet since people sign their names, their height and the date, it’s also documenting the time of the exhibition. He explains how he was inspired by the act of measuring heights in children and thought this is a documentary of time passing in childhood. The artwork then expands and transforms a marginal moment of everyday life. Participation is very spontaneous (I suppose because people are familiar with the practice). It’s a very lively and easygoing interaction, working without words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I like the concept of this, the participatory element and the final visual effect. I see a link with my own work as a behavioural data scientist. I am ambivalent about data visualisation because I am trying to move away from science but I like this example as a possible bridge between the worlds of art and science. I find the participatory element interesting but as an artist, I don’t think I would be satisfied by art that is produced by giving instructions to others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Karina Smigla-Bobinski<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
ADA<\/em> is a “kinetic sculpture” in the form of a large transparent plastic bubble with charcoal stick “sticking out”. It is placed in a white room and makes marks as it bounces on the walls or is pushed by the public. At first, I thought it was less interesting than the height charting but then I read more about it<\/a> on the artist’s website and realised it was how it kept on developing in interaction with other artists because of its multi-dimensional qualities.  Beyond drawing on the wall, it also made a specific sound which a musician picked up on and it had a certain movement quality which inspired dancers. I like this idea of interactivity and how the artwork created new aesthetics through interacting with other artists and inspired so many people. I was also very impressed by how the artist did not just put her kinetic sculpture in the world but also curated people’s reactions to it in a blog<\/a>. By the end, I was blown away (!) by the whole enterprise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This led me to learn about proprioceptive art<\/em>, art that “intentionally provoke the recipients\u2019 perception of their own body” (Schrenk, 2020<\/a>) and an interesting journal: https:\/\/between-science-and-art.com<\/a>. I’m not sure, yet, whether or how I want to bring my background in behavioural science and my art together but this research note definitely helps me in keeping the door open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
